The US Coast Guard uses a formula based on length, breadth, and depth to determine a vessel's net tonnage (volume capacity). To be documentable, the vessel must measure 5 net tons. Typically, vessels 26 feet + are eligible. Commercial vessels 5+ tons, towboats, and dredges operating in U.S. waters are required to be documented by the U.S.C.G.
